"What I learned from the job search" Learn from an alum
Macklin Turnquist, EIT Automation and Validation Engineer at JSAT Automation Inc
OSU Chemical Engineer alum '18
Come and learn about his job search and landing a position during the pandemic
Macklin C. Turnquist (H.B.S. ChemE ’18) is a native of Portland, now working in Los Angeles, CA as an Automation and Validation Engineer at JSat Automation Inc. As an engineering consultant, he automates processes and develops process controls for companies mainly in the biotechnology industry. He has previous experience working as a process control engineer at Precision Castparts Corporation in Milwaukie, OR where he improved front end process control in an aerospace manufacturing facility.
At Oregon State, Macklin worked two MECOP internships at Boeing and Siltronic in the Portland area. He also had a study abroad experience at the University of Nottingham in the UK and research experience as a Johnson intern in Dr. Harper’s lab his freshman and sophomore year, which he later defended as his undergraduate honors thesis for his H.B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering.
His hobbies include learning guitar, skiing, running, reading, and enjoying time spent with good friends.
Macklin hopes to share his career experiences with OSU students and to help pay forward the advice he has received from many friends, family, classmates, professors, mentors, colleagues, job coaches, and engineers.

During the course of his grueling 9-month job search, he garnered a lot of valuable tips and advice along the journey and discovered the power of networking and utilizing connections, the downsides to the current job search system, and ways to circumvent the unfortunately now common job application process of: “tediously filling out the job application, submitting it, and hearing back a few days later with an automated rejection”.
